Mar chuid dár n-iarracht Brat Glas nua a fháil, táimid ag déanamh staidéir faoi láthair ar uisce óil. Rinne Rang 3 turgnamh nó blaiseadh/boladh uisce chun tuiscint níos fearr a fhorbairt ar thruailleáin folaithe in uisce. Is iomaí áit timpeall an domhain nach bhfuil uisce glan agus sábháilte ar fáil don ghnáthduine.
Cuireadh sé chupán líonta le huisce os comhair na bpáistí. Bhí cúig cinn acu ‘truaillithe’ le siúcra, salann, fínéagar, úscra fanaile nó 7-up. Ní raibh na páistí in ann aon difríocht a fheiceáil ach léirigh boladh agus blas an uisce go raibh ‘truailleán’ istigh iontu. Déirigh le roinnt grúpaí na truailleáin a cuireadh san uisce a aithint agus a ainmniú. Dár ndóigh, ní féidir linn gach truailleán in uisce a bhlaiseadh nó a bholadh agus is féidir leo a bheith i bhfad níos baolaí ná na ‘truailleáin’ a d’úsáideamar don triail seo! Go luath, beimid ag foghlaim faoi fhoinsí truailleáin uisce.
As part of our efforts to earn a new Green Flag for the school, we are currently studying drinking water. Rang 3 did an experiment or water tasting/smelling to develop a better understanding of hidden pollutants in water. There are many places around the world where clean and safe water is not readily available.
Six cups filled with water were placed in front of the children. Five of them were ‘polluted’ with sugar, salt, vinegar, vanilla extract or 7-up. The children could not see any difference but the smell and taste of the water showed that they were ‘polluted’ . Some groups managed to identify and name the pollutants that were put into the water. Of course, we cannot taste or smell all pollutants in water and they can be much more dangerous than the ‘pollutants’ we used for this test! Next we willl be looking at the sources of some common water pollutants.
